Route map

The two-day Momella is the same route, compressed. You cover the standard route's first two days in one long push on day one — from Momella Gate to Saddle Hut without an overnight at Miriakamba. Summit push starts at midnight. You descend all the way to Momella Gate on day two.

It is harder. The success rate drops to 85% because your body has less time to adapt before the summit push. The days are longer and the fatigue on descent is real.

We offer it because some climbers genuinely suit this pace. If you have significant recent altitude experience, know how your body responds above 3,500 metres, and are not planning Kilimanjaro in the weeks following, this is a legitimate option that saves time without being reckless.

If you are using Meru to acclimatise for Kilimanjaro, take the four-day standard route. The acclimatisation benefit of the two-day option is significantly reduced — you will arrive at Kilimanjaro's base only marginally better prepared than if you had not climbed at all.

Who this route is for

You are a good candidate for the express route if:

  • You have climbed above 4,000 metres in the last twelve months and handled it well
  • You are not continuing to Kilimanjaro immediately after
  • You have limited time — a weekend window, or a short Tanzania itinerary
  • You are physically very fit and experienced in long mountain days

You should take the standard four-day route if any of the above does not apply, or if you are uncertain.

The route day by day

Day 1 — Momella Gate (1,500 m) to Saddle Hut (3,570 m)

A long day. You will gain over 2,000 metres of altitude. Allow seven to nine hours of walking time, not including stops.

The morning section to Miriakamba Hut is the same as the standard route — forest, wildlife, the Fig Tree Arch, and the ranger at your side. At Miriakamba you stop for lunch, fill water, and keep moving. There is no overnight here today.

The afternoon section from Miriakamba to Saddle Hut climbs through moorland and giant heather into increasingly thin air. The ash cone comes into view through the crater breach. The pace slows. That is normal and correct — do not fight it.

Arrive at Saddle Hut before dark, eat a full meal, and sleep as early as possible. You will be up at midnight.

On the two-day option we skip the Little Meru acclimatisation walk. Your body has not had the same preparation time. Drink well, eat well, and monitor how you feel. If you have a significant headache at Saddle Hut that does not respond to ibuprofen and water, tell your guide. We will adjust the plan.

Day 2 — Saddle Hut (3,570 m) to Socialist Peak (4,566 m), then full descent to Momella Gate (1,500 m)

Midnight start. The crater rim traverse in the dark, the caldera dropping away on your left, the ash cone glowing below. Rhino Point. The narrowing ridge. Socialist Peak at sunrise.

Then you come all the way down.

The descent from Socialist Peak to Momella Gate takes five to seven hours. Your legs will know about it by the time you reach the forest. The wildlife on the lower slopes is a good distraction. Take the giraffe sighting as the mountain's way of saying well done.

Certificates at the gate. Transfer back to Arusha.
